D is for Dealing with Diarrhea

Diarrhea can be serious.  And when you’re miserable and trying not to run to the bathroom every 5 minutes any cure is worth a try.

A little old lady came in to where I work and after chatting for a bit she tells me this really old home remedy her grandmother gave to her to stop diarrhea.  It went something like this:

Mrs. Pierce - “I don’t know if you know this but a while back  I had a colonoscopy that must have upset my digestive system.  I had the worst diarrhea for almost 2 weeks.  I was so mad at that doctor because he told me to take those immodium pills and the didn’t work.  For 2 weeks I had to sleep with towels underneath me.  It would just run, you’d be standing there and all of a sudden it would just run down your leg!”

Me – (thinking to myself – ewwwww!!  why are you telling me this??)  Out loud – “That must have been terrible.”

Mrs. Pierce - “Well it was.  But then I remembered this home rememdy my granny told me.  She said you get some fresh blackberries and put them in a pot.  Put some water in the pot to cover the blackberries and then add a couple of teaspoons of sugar to sweeten it.  Let it boil and then cool down.  After it cools down, drain the blackberries out and drink the juice.”

Me – “Did it work?”

Mrs. Pierce - “You know it did.  I mixed me up a batch of that and the diarrhea stopped right away.  And I was taking six of those immendium pills at a time!  I was so mad at that doctor!”

Now I’ve not yet had the need to try this home remedy so I can’t say for sure it works but if not at least it’s somewhat healthy minus the sugar.  I did think it was pretty funny that she popped up with this story out of nowhere but I also thought it was a pretty interesting home remedy for diarrhea.
